The Testing Process

    1. During our first phone conversation, we will be asking you some general questions regarding your concerns about your child. By the end of the phone call, we will have a better idea of whether your child is a likely candidate for testing.

    2. Because testing your child for dyslexia will involve a considerable investment on your part, as well as significant man hours on ours, we want to be as certain as possible that your child is a viable candidate for dyslexia testing before we begin.

To that end, here is some information to guide us to a successful diagnosis.

    3. At least one week before our parent interview, if you have high-speed internet, please view a video entitled “Could it be Dyslexia?” that is available at http://www.dys-add.com/dysvideo.html . It is necessary for both parents to watch the video. As you watch the video, note any of the warning signs of dyslexia your child shows or has shown. Click here to see a list of warning signs you can use as a checklist. We can also send the checklist..

    •  If you do not have high-speed internet, we will send you a loaner video. We will need you to bring your completed checklist to our first meeting.

    •  Failure of both parents to watch the video will cause our first meeting to be rescheduled.

    4. First meeting with both parents (approximately 2 hours). Because dyslexia is an inherited condition, we must meet with both parents for this important gathering of background information, which will help us accurately diagnose your child. Your child will not attend this meeting.

You will need to bring copies we can keep of:

      •  the checklist you completed while watching the video “Could It Be Dyslexia?”

      •  the signed Testing Agreement (we will mail this to you)

      •  several schoolwork samples (for example: spelling tests with the actual word list; writing samples, preferably unedited)

      •  report cards , as many as you have (The comments on the report cards provide important, relevant information.)

      •  the report for any prior testing for a disability

    5. Testing (approximately 4 hours)

  •  If the child is on any medication for attention, please make sure she/he has taken those meds on schedule. We want to see her/his best work.

•  If the child wears eye glasses, please be sure she/he wears them that day.

•  Please send a snack with the child to eat for renewed energy during the testing.

6. Evaluation of test results

Evaluation of the battery of tests and compiling the data into a final report will take between 30 and 40 hours. Please plan on approximately 4 weeks to receive the evaluation.

7. Final parent meeting

At this meeting, you will receive:

•  Two copies of the test results

•  An explanation of the test results and, if dyslexia is present, a stated diagnosis of dyslexia

•  An action plan for remediation in reading, writing, and spelling

•  Suggested accommodations to present to the child's school for a 504 Plan or for additions to her/his existing IEP.
